A. Location: 

BPC 2012 was held in Napa Valley some 70 miles north of San Francisco on the campus of U.S. News and World Report’s highly-rated Pacific Union College (PUC).  All BPC 2012 events were held in the Fireside Room, which is a building on the PUC campus near the Dining Commons and only a short walk from the Nelson Memorial Library where the Pitcairn Island Study Center is located.  The Fireside Room is marked as number 18 on the Pacific Union College campus map (PDF) and on the smaller Pacific Union College online campus map.  The address of PUC is 1 Angwin Avenue, Angwin, California 94508-9713.  Also see online directions on how to get to Pacific Union College and Driving directions to Pacific Union College (PDF).  The latter also contains information about bus transfers between San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Oakland International Airport (OAK) and Napa, California.

C. Speakers: 
1) Captain Sean Bercaw (Massachusetts) narrated a slide show about his family's four trips to Pitcairn between 1951 and 2002.

2) Pitcairn Islands Study Group (PISG) President Mark A. Butterline (Massachusetts) spoke about Pitcairn Islands philately.

3) Fletcher Christian descendant Jacqui Christian (Pitcairn Island) talked about how she has been able to contribute to Pitcairn's future following her return to live on the island after residing abroad for two decades.   

4) PISG Director-at-Large Ron Edwards (Melbourne, Australia and Norfolk Island) spoke about Pitcairn Islands numismatics.

5) Pitcairn Islands Study Center Director and Pitcairn author Herbert Ford (California) presented his observations about the reliance of Pitcairn Islanders on the charity of passing ship captains and others. 
 

6) Former Commissioner for the Pitcairn Islands Leslie Jaques OBE (Pitcairn Island) offered his insights into the workings of government during during the difficult 2003-2010 period.   

7) Pitcairn/Bounty saga author Bob Kirk, PhD (California) covered some of the highlights of Pitcairn's history.

8) Bounty Saga author Donald A. Maxton (New York) spoke about illustrating the Bounty/Pitcairn Saga.

9) University linguistics professor and author Peter Muhlhausler, PhD (Adelaide, Australia) discussed the role played by Ned Young in the creation of the linguistic landscape of Pitcairn Island.

10) University history professor and author Tillman Nechtman, PhD (New York) separated the truth from the lies told by Joshua Hill, the self-instituted "king" of Pitcairn Island.

11) Former managing editor of PISG's The Pitcairn Log and prolific philatelic author Steve Pendleton (California) described some of Pitcairn's island neighbors.

12) Maritime, Bounty, and Pitcairn collector and world traveler Tony Probst (California) narrated a slide show on Pitcairn Island and its inhabitants. 

13) Historian Roger Stuart-Andrews (Melbourne, Australia) spoke about the ultimate fate of Fletcher Christian:  did he return to Cumberland?

14) Pitcairn-born and raised Marie Christian Thomas (New Mexico) talked about some of the experiences she had while growing up on the island.

PUC dormitory rooms with shared shower/toilet were available for up to four nights (in August 19/out August 23) at a cost of $78.00 per night per double or single.  These rooms were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to those paying the registration fee.  Full payment in advance was required, and all payments were NON-REFUNDABLE.  A single check could be written to cover both conference registration and dormitory accommodation.  Further information is available here. 

Bed and breakfast and motel accommodation at higher rates were available in St. Helena (8 miles away), Calistoga (12 miles), Yountville (17 miles), Napa (26 miles) and Santa Rosa, CA (40 miles).  See the tourism links page for more information.

G. Non-refundable Registration Fees (which did not include accommodation, transportation, nor meals):

Price for full program:
$80.00 per person for the mixer with video presentation on Sunday, August 19 plus the full program on Monday-Tuesday, August 20-21, 2012.

Price for either Monday or Tuesday (but not both days):
$20.00 per person for either Monday, August 20 or Tuesday, August 21, 2012.  This single-day rate, payable in cash at the door, accommodated local residents who were welcome to attend on a space-available basis.  However, those who attended on Monday for $20.00 and who also wished to attend on Tuesday were charged $60.00 for Tuesday.   

H. Table of Deadlines:

Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21, 2012:  The prices in "G" above apply for payments made in advance or at the door.  The mixer on Sunday, August 19 was only open to those who had paid in advance.


I. Registration Procedures:

At-the-door payment was accepted by cash or by check payable to "Pitcairn Islands Study Center."


1) For those who paid via PayPal:

Registrants were asked to download and print the 2-page BPC 2012 registration form here.  To pay by PayPal, registrants used 2012BPC@gmail.com by clicking on the "Donate" button below.  Payment was acknowledged via email. 

Registrants filled in the registration form and also signed the "Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement" on page 2.  (The text of that document is also shown below for handy reference.)  Prospective applicants (a) scanned the registration form and emailed it to 2012BPC@gmail.com or (b) faxed it to 1-707-965-6504 “Attn Herbert Ford.”

Registrants were requested to click on the "Donate" button immediately above.  This PayPal button allows each person making a payment to choose the amount.  Registrants were told to feel free to add a donation to the registration fee of $80.00 per person (and to the dorm room full prepayment, if applicable).  Registrants were asked to mention the donation amount under "Purpose" on the PayPal online form.

Dormitory rooms were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to those paying their registration fees. 

Financial assistance was sought as BPC 2012 was run on a not-for-profit basis.  Donation details at the BPC 2012 Donor Hall of Fame are located here. 

2) If paying by check:
 
Registrants downloaded and printed the 2-page BPC 2012 registration form here.  They made their checks payable to "Pitcairn Islands Study Center."   

Registrants filled in the registration form and also signed the "Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement" on page 2.  (The text of that document is also shown below for handy reference.)  Then they mailed the registration form along with their checks, including donation (if any) to:

The fine print (in which registrants promised not to sue) follows: 
 

J. Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement:

In exchange for attending and participating in the Bounty-Pitcairn Conference 2012 at Pacific Union College in Angwin, California August 19-21, 2012 ("the Conference"), I agree not to sue:

§    Pacific Union College, its officers, employees and agents;

§    Pitcairn Islands Study Center, its director, employees and agents;

§    Pitcairn Islands Study Group, its officers, members and agents;

§    FRIENDS of PITCAIRN Yahoo! Group, its moderator, members and agents; and

§    the volunteers present at the Conference

and I release all those listed above from liability for any and all claims, including claims of personal injury, accidents, or illnesses (including death) and property loss arising from participation in the Conference.

I understand that participation in the Conference carries with it certain inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to avoid injuries.  I am participating freely and I understand that I assume all ordinary inherent risks.

I agree to indemnify and hold harmless:

§    Pacific Union College, its officers, employees and agents;

§    Pitcairn Islands Study Center, its director, employees and agents;

§    Pitcairn Islands Study Group, its officers, members and agents;

§    FRIENDS of PITCAIRN Yahoo! Group, its moderator, members and agents; and

§    the volunteers present at the Conference

from any and all claims, actions, suits, procedures, costs, expenses, damages and liability, including attorney's fees brought as a result of my involvement in the Conference and to reimburse them for any such expenses incurred.

I agree that this waiver, assumption of risk and indemnification is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by California law and that if any part is held invalid, I agree that the remainder of this agreement shall continue in full legal force and effect.                                                                                                        

I have read this waiver of liability, assumption of risk and indemnity agreement, fully understand its terms, and understand that I am giving up substantial rights, including my right to sue.
