Pitcairn Islands Study Group Director-at-Large Ron Edwards' interest in Pitcairn
began in 1957 when, as a stamp collector returning home with the latest new
issues, he was drawn to a set of Pitcairn stamps depicting island scenes.
Having decided to learn what he could about this remote community, over time his
interest developed into an obsession; and Mr. Edwards sought anything and
everything he could read and collect. Today his collection includes books,
magazines, newspaper articles, photos, postcards, videos, DVDs, stamps, postal
history, first day covers and artifacts, all of which are kept in two former
bedrooms of his Melbourne, Australia home. In 1998 a dream was realized when
Mr. Edwards was able to spend an all-too-short 15 days on Pitcairn, where he'd
like to return again someday for a longer stay.
A retired carpenter and builder, Mr. Edwards and his wife Maureen built a
new home on Norfolk Island recently. Married for 47 years, the couple have two daughters and three
grandchildren.
Mr. Edwards' latest interest is the coins which the Pitcairn administration
began issuing in 1988. He now has about 60 Pitcairn coins in total and says
there are some stories to be told about the various design and circulation
difficulties.
